the hopefully obvious fault with it is of course that the equator is half the length it should be. but it conserves the percentages of oceans/continents in each latitude, so it might be useful in some cases. (Mollweide (2:1) ellipse with 1:1 (circular) aspect that is, but has it got a short and recognized name?).
