(Addition:FreeBSD should probably be somewhere right of the constellation β Gru?, as it tries to do much in direct binary, like unix, Linux is more lenient in the use of programming languages i guess.) Various free operating systems have stable and rolling releases, that is, those that are tested more and updated not too frequently, and those that are receiving updates frequently, but on occasion might cause issues. Once a rolling release is rolled far enough away from the release it started people might give it a separate name, so there are probably other popular releases about if you read this far im the future.

Anyway, the look and feel of a Free OS depends much on the Desktop Environment it's using. Some distributions allow systemic changes only through the Command Prompt, while this is a good precautionary method to prevent the user to do harm to important System Files, many commercial OSes have much prevented the user to touch these files almost wholly (if the user is not a professional). At least the few Free OS systems I've checked use the master password user himself has set to allow changes in the System Files. Just remember not to touch files outside your home directory, if you're unsure what you do. Of course if you want to change the system in some way, f.e. to run some programs not within the Free OS point and click system, you have to go there. Some distributions have point and click menus for some settings, but not all mac and windows programs will run their installation programs on Free OS, nor install properly if they do run. Ask the program vendor about a version that could run or use an alternative. Sometimes an older version of a program might run on another OS.

Mind you, the 'constellation' presented is only visible totally from quite southern latitudes. Circular design for organizing the elements. It's a pity we don't have a 16-hour
clock, I could have constructed this much neater then. And why abandon the fine
Bohr-model all together? Some elements are not of this world, thus they're
purplish-violet (and radioactively decay to some other colors)

Chemistry info:

1s = night vs. day

2,3,4,5,6,7s and p by groups = 2*3*30min = 2*hour and a half/day , groups IV
and 0 have been set to mark the midnight and noon time.

the 40 d-block elements each take = 2,25min = 2min 15s to pass

the f-block goes to the seconds = 1 element every 4,82 secs

This system works well with the human usage of words. "Gimme just a
second" usually means at least 4 seconds. "This'll take only a moment" would
be 2 1/4 minutes. "It'll be ready within an hour" customarily means an hour
and a half, doesn't it? Other plus sides, I don't know. At least it summarily
works until element 119 is found.

Possibly continuing this project with some hard data additions at some point.
And it's somewhat ugly now, but it was hard enough to draw a regular
40-hedron. Sp orbitals are organised spirally so there are two regular hours
and a radioactive hour after these. ;-) , there's no other justification to
set them up like this that I'd consider helpful. The other way to count the
hours would require 40 minutes in half an hour, so the lanthanide/actinide
seconds would be near the current second.

The simplest possible diagram of orbital alignement (degrees) of comets between 200-2000 AU (average), just because en.wikipedia was missing this. There's likely some observational bias here, as I believe the comets are easiest to find near the celestial north pole. It's pretty easy to point a wide-field telescope towards Stella Polaris, and take an overnight shot or several. Comets would show as ripples or lines curving out or in between the regular arcs of normal stars.
Though this system doesn't base itself to any universal physical constant, it can (by definition) be derived from these. At least it should be. Currently the physicist are guessing that between 19 to 26 constants are present in universe, not accounting the possible constants associated with dark matter and dark energy. Many of these are of no use in normal human interactions. It's also clear that a system based on these would need to be normalized to be usable in human context. F.e., I could say I'm 1,126077784 * 1035 Planck lengths tall, but why not say this with simpler numbers and say I'm c. 6 feet. We might take 1035 Planck Lenghts as our base unit in such a system to get on human scale (this would be ~161,6 cm aka ~5 feet 3⅝ inches).

The metric system might also need refinement, as the base of all metric measures has been changed over time. F.e. metre is no longer a 1/10'000'000th of the quarter of the distance round the globe via poles, but something to do with wave-particle frequencies in a theoretical perfect vacuum (oops, quite not so), making the exact metre accessible to only physicists and their imagination. But it must be agreed that this distance changes also by natural means, heavy earthquakes and such large mass movements shape the earth. These natural phenomena and the measurement errors present in the late 18th century make the current meter ~0,1478% too large for the original definition. Still, many countries use the SI-based system of measurement. This is of course no problem as long as the numbers we get can be converted to natural units. It just wouldn't be prudent to say to an alien, "I'm 1,82 meters". Or maybe it would, but she/he/it wouldn't understand. She/he/it might also decide I'm too Earth-centric to live. Thus we might use multiples or fractions of natural units as a base. I guess this is not a large problem currently, but soon might be.

The headline of this post is of course inspired by the you-know-who, with the exception of changing the noun to the correct one (MUGA instead of MAGA). Many of you have likely already guessed what the post is about. That is, the incompatibility between the historical, anthropogenically derived units of measurement and the almost scientific SI-system. The reason why I say "almost" in this context should be obvious to math and phys students, this is of course the nature of universe in which there are no irrational numbers (as far as we can know it). F.e. we need 62 decimals of π to calculate the circumference of the universe to multiples of Planck lengths. Planck length is about the shortest accepted length within the framework of quantum physics (without considering black holes) so this number of decimals should be the only ones needed. Still, mathematicians can live on their imaginary Euclidian Plane and calculate it much further. π to 62 decimals is 3.14159265358979323846264338327950288419716939937510582097494459 and the physicists won't need to blow up their computers' math processors. There are a whole bunch of these numbers not existing in the universe, as any mathematician may tell you. Heck, there is even a number j for which j2=1, but j≠1! The things people dream up.

The whole shebang above of course means that ∞ and 0 would exist only in our imagination, or at least be even harder to define than now. Alternately, we could define "universe = 1", and all the numbers we use would be fractions of this, but this is veering to ontological questions and the foundations of mathematics, so I better leave it alone. F.e. the situation where you have 0$ wouldn't exist, but instead the bank might say you have ε$ on your account (1st definition). As there are no coins of this size, the real life effect would be the same.

To cut to the chase, to MUGA, you the people of USA, could convert the aged measurement units you use to the SI-based system with the following conversion factors (suggested names for the units included):

inch = 2.5 cm
inch*2/5 = 1 cm
4*inch = 10 cm
6*inch = 15 cm = lttle hands span
7*inch = 17.5 cm = span
10*inch = 25 cm = foot = shoe size 10 (or 40)
12*inch = 30 cm = old foot
2*foot = 1/2 m
3*foot = 75 cm = step
3*old foot = 90 cm = yard
4*foot = 1 m = hobbit
4*old foot = 1.20 m = there's nothing that is this size (minimum size of dwarfs)
6*foot = 1.50 m = dwarf
12*foot = 3 m
26*step + 2*foot = 20 m = chain
lap*1/2 = 200 m = furlong
lap = 400 m
4*lap = 1600 m = old mile
2000 steps = 1500 m = 1000 dwarfs = mile
2*mile = 3000 m = chase
2000 yards = 1800 m = nautical mile

This would instantly make US at least 0,5% greater, and for the bolder of you, who would convert to the 'new' mile of 1500 m, a whole 7.2896% greater. This would mean the mile-run records might be made greaterer and areas would similarly be huge'er by far. Similar adjustments could be made for weights, like, pound is half a kilo, so everyone would feel less fat (c.9%) afterwards. I'm not going to go through all the conversions required to MUGA, but you really should change the gallon to be 3,75 liters so you'd get more gallons per buck. Some additional suggestions for conversion factors may appear on the page later on the blog after I figure out what the odd electric voltage you guys use means for electric bills.

If you feel this is a cheap trick, consider that you use an imperial system, despite having a two-party democracy and a president (of sorts).

(Hopefully I got the calculations correct)
The significant problem with the map described above is, that J.R.R. Tolkien, the Translator, has on several occasions stated that Shire is located approximately along the latitudes of his European home. On the map pictured above, England and it’s various –shires are though situated way too much to the south of the true location. The Shire we’re seeking for would seem to be in the deep hug of the North Sea. I’m somewhat hesitant to propose the following, knowing the attention to distances traveled given by the translator of the Thain’s Book. What’s more, huge areas of Eriador are also sunk in the map. This likely cannot have happened without an extensive intervention by the Powers. We might think they’ve relocated most parts of it elsewhere in the Middle Earth, but then it cannot be explained how “hobbits may still be found on areas they’ve always lived.” By this reasoning I’m speculating that J.R.R. Tolkien used at least two different scales when he was translating the map of the Middle Earth. Might it be, he has used ‘the mile of the hobbits’ while drawing Eriador?

We can decipher the length of ‘the hobbit mile’ rather easily (;-)). The current British Mile (1609m) has been created from the natural lengths of humans. The length of a thousand paces is relatively easy to count even by hand. Thus, in earlier times, the true length of a mile has been dependent of the terrain. The more difficult terrain is, the shorter miles we have. Still, the experienced orienteers can estimate their travelling distances notably accurately in the number of paces between the controls. That is to say, they know their pace-lengths in various terrains. And they make a difference between walking-paces and running-paces. In the times of Middle Earth, this skill would have been well developed in all persons travelling long distances.

The height of an average hobbit (3½ feet) and human (5 ¾ feet) gives us an approximation of their pace lengths. Thus we get the ratio between ‘the hobbit mile’ and a regular mile to be approximately the same as in the previous calculation between kilometers and miles, namely 0,61. Thus we could imagine the British Isles to be projected c. 2,6 times larger than Europe (1/(0,62*061)).

Tolkien was an Englishman, but a catholic. Thus it was natural for him to use miles instead of kilometers describing distances. That he was a member of religious minority in his native country, the Anglican superpower of Great Britain, might have influenced to the fact that the areas assigned to England seem to be way larger than the rest of the Europe, on the maps of Middle Earth. Whatever the reasons, it appears that the measurements in Eriador seem to be about 4,1 times bigger (~1,6^3) than in the rest of the map.

There is still an additional problem with projecting the British Isles to the map of the Middle Earth. That is of course, there’s nothing in the Middle Earth resembling the English Channel, or North Sea, for that matter. I cannot offer any better solution to this problem, but that the Professor has decided to omit this for literary purposes and the demands of the storyline. The travel along the North Sea would have undoubtedly have been exciting, but how could the black riders travel along the seas controlled by Ulmo?

Thus it is reasonable, if not entirely prudent, to seek a way to connect an enlarged map of British Isles to the map of Europe so the sea in between is the smallest possible. This may be achieved by rotating the enlarged map of British Isles some tens of degrees clockwise. And here we finish our projection of Middle Earth to Europe. The differences between the shapes of Cornwall and Wales and the respective parts of Middle Earth may be explained by the distortions in the projection, but proving this is beyond me.

This projection changes the distances travelled by Frodo and companions quite a lot, especially the trek between Sarn Gebir and Mordor, and the chase of Orcs across Rohan by three companions seem unnaturally fast, but might it be the Translator of the Book of Westmarch has left out the uninteresting parts of the journey?

I do not know why J.R.R. Tolkien would have thought Scotland as the Northern Waste, but for Ireland, that’s out of the projection, I might have an explanation. Numenor was the pinnacle of civilization in the Middle Earth of Men, but this was lost. It was located way more to the south of where Ireland is now, possibly somewhere on the latitudes of Iberia, where the ancient peoples of continental Celts and Basques lived. Looking at the world map today, on this latitude we find the Azores Islands. Ireland might have been part of these, and be resurfaced and relocated by the continental drift described in the previous chapters. I have not drawn this to the map as this interpretation isn’t supported by any previous attempts in the projections of Middle Earth to Europe. It could be Ireland is just a new island like Numenor was.

In the last part of the series, I’m intending to seek and locate more or less exact correspondences between locations of Europe and project them on Middle Earth map. I’ve only just begun to make these maps, so I’m asking for patience. (It appears Laichalaf (the nick on Kontu.info, who’s done this interpretation) has not continued the series, so this might be the end of the series.)

If we take the notion of ‘Europe is Middle Earth’ as a fact, and if we try to seek the smallest changes required to transform one to another, the best source of transformation would likely be that there wouldn’t have been any actual physical transformation. We know that the current maps of Europe are pretty accurate within limits, but could it be the maps of Middle Earth are not? Looking at the maps of Middle Earth, there are pretty vast areas that look much uncharted. Some maps do have topographic lines or equivalent, but if we take out all the text in the maps, we see that there is not much detailed info on many areas. Where is Rhosgobel? How many rivers and streams go unmarked in the maps? Are there regular settlements in southern Eriador or Enedwaith? Where are the villages of Dunland? [map: blank map of Middle Earth]

This is only natural. Frodo Baggins, who is assumed to be the drawer of the original map, would have naturally concentrated to the areas he himself had seen. No doubt there were better maps of elvish make extant even in those days, but as we do not know the extent of library of Bag End, we cannot know if Frodo had these at his disposal. It could be that the elves would have kept the details of these secret, to keep their meeting places out of common knowledge. It could also be they didn’t have any more detailed maps but would have remembered the details by oral tradition.

In any case, it is possible that the map is entirely a work of Frodo the Hobbit. It could be even the coastlines of Middle Earth have been drawn from memory of some Gondorian or Rivendellian map. There’s little doubt he knew the Ea(rth) was made round (Ea r(ounde)th) when Aman was taken to another planet, the friendship between him and Aragorn and Elrond would have pretty much guaranteed this. This presents some problems in drawing maps as most educated people today know.

It looks like that notable cartographic distortion can be found on the maps of Middle Earth. These entirely normal errors in making maps are generated when transposing the surface of a ball to the 2-dimensional flat surface. This cannot be done so the finished map would retain areas and shapes and directions accurately. On the maps of the Middle Earth, the patterns of distortions are not entirely clear to me, and I gladly leave this task to some skilled geographer with good knowledge of maps and their projections. What I can say, is that the distortion is evident at least in the east and north of the map. Partly, the distortions might be a result of uncertain information, we really do not know much of these areas. Only Aragorn and Curunir have been known to travel far outside the areas we know.

In the normal 2-d maps of earth, the areas near the borders of the maps change shape, they might twist and get seemingly longer or shorter, fatter or thinner. Also the distances between locations here get altered, so many many maps abandon the distance scale all together. Nowadays though, we can express an area the size of Europe pretty accurately in distances and directions and shapes by using fe. the trimetric Chamberlin projection or equidistant conic projection, but the calculations involved are quite fiendish to do by hand (they’re not easy even with computers). Of the persons in third age there are but few scholars during the Age of Kings in Gondor, in addition to Curunir, who might have managed to draw and solve these. Acquisition of accurate distance measurements from all over Endor would still have been difficult.

We may thus assume J.R.R. Tolkien, or the drawer of the original map of Middle Earth, has used a projection that has been more simple to produce. These are plenty, and it might never get solved, which the projection exactly was. We though may note, that the rivers of Celduin and Carnen far-east in Middle Earth conjoin pretty much like Volga and Kama rivers in Russia. Their alignment on maps resembles the route taken by Vikings to the Constantinople, so the connection to medieval Europe can be found. Has there been Northmen in the Kingly guard of Gondor? The answer might be found in the remaining archives of Gondor.

Assuming the north parts of the maps are similarly condensed, we can show that the Misty Mountains reached further north and the Lake of Rhun located further east and south. Also, the Iron Hills may be located very much to the east of the conventional thought. This east-north-south distortion conveniently locates Erebor much more north than we usually think. Its location now though would be in Karelia, near the areas where the Finnish folklore of ancient times was collected. Missing a good alternative, I’ll propose that Lake Yanis in Karelia, is falsely interpreted as an impact structure, and is the location. Aule (with the help of Iluvatar) must have snatched Erebor, along with her inhabitants away from this Earth. Checking the areas of massive changes to the Middle Earth thus far described, leaves us a relatively stable area of Brown Lands, so the mixed people that was generated here, the Kurgans, were strengthened and are now, by some, interpreted as a birthplace of much of European cultures.

After these huge changes, the real one and the ones produced by the difficulties in map making, our map of the Middle Earth looks like the following. Without the knowledge of the projection used in the map of the Middle Earth, it is impossible to know how distorted the areas on edges of the map are, I have thus limited the correction of the distortion somewhat, partly also due technical reasons. The discovery of more exact correspondences between maps of Middle Earth and Europe is left to later and better cartographers. On the map, I have left the southern part of Misty Mountains to their original location, so the readers can more easily equate the modern and third age locations. It can be though quite easily shown (oh yeah) that their size corresponds quite exactly the size of the mountains still missing in the modern European map.

On the next part, that is maybe the second to last one, we’ll wonder how on Earth we can fit the British Isles to the location we have been told, and we’ll ask if this is necessary, on these times after the 1950s.

There is no general agreement of the dating of the continental drift described in the previous chapter. But, all through history, there are sections of times, which have not been securely dated. The best possible dates for the continental drift to happen would though be during the late first millennium or the early second millennium of the fourth age. Of these, there’s an example earlier in this thread (ref. http:kontu.info) that mentions the period preceding the founding of the first dynasty of Egypt, or the first Intermediate Period of Egypt. There are some other possible solutions to this dilemma, but most of these would require the current accepted histories of Europe to be proven false, or made up, somewhat similarly to what the article in the periodical ‘Onion’ states of the ancient Greeks. .

Of course, we can calculate the necessary speed of the required continental drift, which would allow Umbar to be relocated to its current position, during the gaps of historical uncertainties. The Mediterranean Sea is about 4000km wide, and because Umbar was located approximately where Crete is now, we’ll get the necessary speed of continental drift by a simple calculation. 3000 km divided by 87660 hours (the 100 years of First Intermediate Egypt) is 3,4 meters per hour. This speed is of course enormous compared to what we see nowadays, but could we easily see that a huge island far out in the Ocean is moving at this speed? During a human lifetime, even this slow speed becomes certainly observed, but maybe the changes happening nearer-by have diverted the chroniclers’ attention.

We can use the same calculation to observe how fast the mountains, even mountain chains, might have lowered or grown, and we’ll get, f.e. the speed of lowering the peaks of Hithaeglir to the sea level to be c. 5500m/876600hours = 6 millimeters/hour. Again, we get a speed that, by human eye, might take even three years to notice. As time passes, this speed will get noticed, but can you always trust the tales of old men or women? These kinds of changes have though been very conducive in creating the folk tales and sagas of Gods’ works. We may for example ask, could the Epic of Gilgamesh have its origin in the destruction of South Gondor, or maybe the parting of the Iberian Peninsula from the other Middle East is the source? Is it possible that Persian Gulf was created during the same drift, and created this epic?

The most widespread change, aside the continental drift described above, that happened on Middle Earth during the 4th Age was the relocation of the material forming the southern, and indeed partly also, the northern Misty mountains. For this we may give thanks to Valar. For the mining opearations of the dwarfs in Moria, they noticed the Evil of Morgoth may reside in deep uncharted places on Arda. Hithaeglir was created by the Grand Evil, and thus was not intended to be a part of the original Song of Ainur. Thus during the fourth age the Valar and their folk turned the whole Misty Mountains around, to their former mirror image, in search of a second Balrog and other evil things. Now they know all the Misty mountain passes and where Orome may ride easily over them, if the need still be. The happenstance of Orthanc location, to be where Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest was, may be just that. The location of the palantir of Orthanc is though again unknown.

The ents had their share in the geological transformations of the Misty Mountains, the Last March of Ents got an appreciative reception among Valar, and they lowered the mountains near Isengard, Isengard. The Valar sought out ancient creatures in alliance with Saruman, but in part they did this work thanking the works of Onodrim. This way the entkind could visit their friends in Shire and elsewhere in Eriador much more easily. The information of this deed comes from Skinbark, who ‘suddenly found himself to be in a climate of a whole 1500m lower altitude’ It’s likely he had a direct connection to the representatives of Valar during these times, at least he’s been known to discuss with the eagles of the mountains every now and then. All the rocks, cliffs, mountains, stones, boulders, and even bedrock removed from the Misty Mountains ended up in various locations in the Middle Europe and the Scandinavian Mountains. (Laichalaf, the original writer, wasn’t present in the west during this time, he was seeking a way to travel to the continent which formed when the Walls of the Sun fell down, and he claims that no ent still hasn’t visited the Americas, who knows, maybe ent-wives have?)

Thus the Baltic Sea started to form. The lands of the Beornings began to submerge. So were destroyed the evidence of the hobbit habitations in these parts of the Earth, and even most of Lorien was drowned by the rising waters. Only the island of Bornholm reminds of us of the Mound of Amroth. The Beornings moved to higher grounds as Beorn himself had foretold and the Men of the Forest could resettle the Eryn Lasgalen. One saddish result of these changes is of course, very few people still believe that there are hobbits still living on their old grounds on the shores of Baltic. In the more eastern Endor, less changes happened and the northmen could still live in their Lake-town which by these times could be in the easternmost corner of the Baltic Sea.

As the Misty Mountains were turned upside down, effectively changing them to be made by Valar and not the great enemy, the evidence of elven realms somewhere around the fjord of Oslo has also disappeared. The map presented later in this study, places Rivendell somewhere around Åmål in Sweden, and this obviously cannot be true. In any case, even if the changes would have happened in just 6mm/hour, the archeological evidence of the foundations of the buildings would be very hard to impossible to find, at least in somewhat intact form. Thus it is not hard to believe the newer religions have taken a foothold among men. For animals, the choice of the nesting site would have presented some difficulties, but many of them build a new nest every year.

In cartography, one of the difficulties is the wide variety of different projections, so a full one-to-one equivalence between maps of Middle Earth and Europe is hard to find. Without knowing the methods which J.R.R. Tolkien used in achieving the projection presented in the Book of Westmarch, this might be impossible. In the next part, we’ll take a look on these difficulties and seek out sources of more potential inaccuracies of the directions, distances and scales in the usual maps of Middle Earth.

The formation of the Mediterranean Sea and the destruction of Mordor

In the early 1930s, when Tolkien was beginning his translation of the Lord of the Rings, the theory of continental drift was circled in academies, but the mechanism to move the continents proved difficult to be find. No one had seen the continents move. Later the theory evolved into modern plate tectonics, and currently this is accepted by all but most fringe scholars. The current theory states the movement of continents is always slow, but has it been always so? During the early 1900s there also emerged an understanding of how large was the destruction caused by the War of Wrath, as the scholars learnt how to trace the remnants of the Ice Age in the landscapes. Thus it is no wonder that continents and parts of them can move. That we haven’t seen any fast movements in recent times, doesn’t mean these couldn’t happen, especially so, if the Great Ones lead by Aule and Tulkas, maybe even Eru, would promote these. It took a while for the people in the Middle-Earth to notice, that the Great Ones of Arda removed a whole continent of Aman away from the planet! But, in this world teeming humans, one would think some oral histories of the great changes of 4.A., if not a direct written account, would remain to our time from those early days. We can of course think Eru has touched It’s creation to diminish the memories of the horrors, Sauron and Morgoth, in people’s minds, but is even this enough of an explanation to the lack of memoirs of these changes?

From the map depicted in Part I, we saw that Gondor must have experienced huge alterations in geomorphology after the War of the Ring. These changes include the turning of Anduin the Great, towards the plains of Mordor, the birth of Adriatic and Aegean Seas, and the sudden appearance and inclusion of the Iberian Peninsula to the lands of NW Middle Earth. Of the more southern lands of Endor, we know little of, we can’t even say how far west Harad and Far-Harad reached during the third age. Really, the only area we know something of, in the south, is Umbar. The early maps of the Endor J.R.R. Tolkien presented us, show though the Far-Harad somewhat resembles Africa, but as I do not have the books (though I’ve read them in the past) that describe and explain these, I can’t say much of what has been actually said about these far out lands. The same goes for Hildorien and Cuivienen, that have undoubtedly located somewhere in the far-east, there are several Bays bordering the Pacific and Indian Oceans, whence it would take several years to walk to the western shores of Endor.

On the same map the Andrast Peninsula is located where the Pyrenees would currently be. It’s shape, and size, though corresponds almost one-to-one with the southern part of the Apennine Peninsula. This is the first clue of the vast changes in former Gondor territory. Thus the Andrast would move in front of the Belfalas Peninsula to form the characteristic ‘boot of Italy’ (Calabria, Basilicata, parts of Campania and Apulia). The Belfalas Island located here would need to go, and as we check, it’s form and size is almost exactly the same as for Corsica. The other possibilities, Sicily or Sardinia, are not as close matches. For our purposes, we might assume that Tolfalas is Corsica.

The indisputable lack of areas of Spain and Portugal in the normally shaped maps of Middle-Earth, could get an explanation from the fastest and most far-reaching movement of continents during the fourth age. In this event, three gross, huge, use whatever extreme adjective, divergent faults form between the Umbar territory and other parts of Near-Harad. The southern part of the eastern fault, by chance, resembles the Red Sea- East African Rifts. Thus the whole of the hither lands currently forming Africa and Iberia, would move to their current locations. I assume J.R.R. Tolkien meant Umbar as being on the location of current Lissabon, which has a great natural harbor and was a strong competitor as a sea power for English ports in the more modern history. Thus we can explain the formation of the eastern part of the Mediterranean, as the size of Iberia is comparable to it, and state that Madrid, Jerusalem and Jericho were among the chief cities of inland Umbar territory. Believe that if you will. As the continental drift continues, the rest of the Mediterranean Islands drop on the way from the main body of Iberia. Thus we get all the rest of the lands from Cyprus to Balearic Islands. Yeah, right.

A certain amount of faith is also required for other changes that would have happened in Gondor. Minas Morgul might have been destroyed so no stone was upon stone, but could we believe a whole mountain, or several, would have been lost from under Shelob’s Lair and the Pass of Morgul? This, at least, is required that lower Anduin would have carved a new path from the Iron Gates of Romania, to form the lowest Danube. Is this a co-op by the dwarfs and Aule? Has the fierce Tulkas added waters flowing to Mordor, and fallen down and moved Ered Lithui to the location of Caucasus? Additionally, some large clan of dwarfs must have dug an enormous channel of the Dardanelles and all the other channels of Turkey all the way to the Aegean Sea! The south Gondor hasn’t endured this amount of godly and other work, but has been destroyed in eastern parts and created the Greek lore of Gods! But even this won’t explain the presence of the Adriatic in modern maps. We can only guess what has happened to the shores of Lebennin. Extensive areas of it are now resting in sea. This must though, in my opinion, have something to do with the formation of the mountains surrounding Adriatic. I for one cannot believe Aule or Tulkas would miss a hit so badly, soI can’t provide any other explanation for the Adriatic, than a Judgement of Eru for the inhabitants of coastal Lebennin. Why this would’ve happened I can’t say.

On the map below, these changes to the southern Middle Earth are brutally smashed together, and the most uncertain part of the theory has been told. We may for example guess that Umbar experienced a revolution by Eru-minded slaves and was rewarded by the movement toward west, to be included in the areas of free peoples. This theory neatly explains the oxygen-depleted water of the Black Sea, which would be a result of the drowning of the toxic mine waste and other sludge in Mordor, made in Sauron’s time. Oh, yeah. A teeny-weeny bit of faith is required.

[Kartta 3, Laichalaf]

On the next part, we move some other mountains and mountain chains, and we’ll wonder why the upper Anduin had to be drowned under the Baltic Sea. Some talk of Eriador maybe present too.
The Geographical Transformations in the 4th Age

Preface

“The northwestern parts of the Middle-Earth correspond to the Europe and its ancient past”. This we have been told since the 1950s, when J.R.R. Tolkien got his translation of the Red Book of Westmarch, also know as the Book of Thain, completed. We have also been told some details of the more exact locations of European places on the map of the Middle-Earth. This makes it very intriguing to try to find a good projection to match the two the best possible way, as this could allow the history of earth to be connected to the history of Middle-Earth, so that the former would follow the latter.

As Middle-Earth has seen some large geological transformations in the earlier ages, instigated by Eru or the Mighty Ones, Valar, I see no reason why these kinds of seemingly sudden transformations should stop right after the history described in the Lord of the Rings. There’s though no doubt that f.e. the Fall of Numenor has been a cataclysmic event, but there are some doubts of the Sinking of Beleriand, was it fast or did it happen gradually during the early 2nd age? What has happened, geologically, to the Walls of the Sun, during the Rounding of the Earth? This study won’t touch these matters, but instead, tries to find a new way to connect Europe to Midde-Earth, as many have tried before.

There are several difficulties in achieving this task. For one thing, the Roman maps locating and describing the structures on Iberian Peninsula make it difficult to believe the transformations would be medieval. There’s nothing resembling Iberia in the standard maps of Middle-Earth. Thus the ”modernization of the northwestern Endor” would need to be placed to the prehistorical or very early historical period. One excellent example of this has been published in the paper Mallorn (http://3rings.webs.com/chronology), and this has even been accepted to en.wikipedia as a source. In the following, I’ve taken this dating of the War of the Ring as a fact. The periodization of later Ages has been changed here to conform the common C.E. counting of years, to get normal years, count forward from 3012 B.C.E.

Part I

As was stated in the preface, the Valar and Eru were the sole source of geomorphology in the Middle Earth. Indeed, if we compare the shapes of northwestern parts of Endor and the current Europe, the overlay is pretty poor. Thus it seems likely some great changes have happened after the end of the Third Age (T.A), and as the modern science has been lacking the ability to connect these, the likely mediators of the changes that would have had to happen would likely be the same.

On most of the maps we have on Middle Earth there’s a scale drawn. The scale on most of these is drawn by miles, by which we can estimate the travelling distances of the Nine Companions, or compare the speed and endurance of Shadowfax to the modern day horses. That Shadowfax clearly runneth, at it’s best, at the approximate speed of a steam-powered local train during the early 1900s, would indicate the magic on our days has waned. There’s though another explanation for the speeds measured this way. That is, the measurement systems have changed from those days of the Unified Kingdom, when the original maps of Middle Earth have been made. There are other possible sources of errors in the maps, many of which I’ll source in this explanation of the geological developments during the Fourth Age (4.A)

I’ll highlight two of these here:

1. On various translations other archaic measures of lengths are used, f.e. the Finnish translation uses the word ‘virsta’ (rus:versta) which historically has been almost anything from 1067 m to 1784 m and may have sometimes been double of that. Can we be sure that the Translator had got the lengths of the Middle Earth measures correct?
2. The relative sizes of the Peoples inhabiting Middle Earth. Could it be that they used their own measurement systems, i.e. was the elbow-length (that is, ell or cubit) of hobbits the same as it was for the men, let alone ents? The same would go for the longer measures of length. Are the measurements in Gondor the same as in Shire? Are the peoples in Lord of the Rings talking by their own measurements or by a common standard?

We all know of the maps of Middle-Earth projected on Europe, in which the adaptation has used the given measures, be it in current miles or ‘virsta’s, pretty much exactly. Here depicted is one of them [1] http://i.stack.imgur.com/GtiS8.png . On another attempt, the projection of the map has been mathematically altered somewhat [2] http://rhodesmill.org/brandon/static/2009/google-middle-earth-corrected-big.jpg . For one, the Misty Mountains do not conform to anything in the modern day Europe. Thus it might be better to seek the least amount of changes necessary, to get the current map of Europe from the map of the Middle-Earth. But, these kinds of maps are of course ok, if you assume Eru has almost completely reworked the northwestern parts of Endor after 3102 BC.

J.R.R. Tolkien was English, but a catholic. As an Englishman, the natural choice of miles, as a measure of distance, is given. But, as a catholic, he might have had mixed feelings of the metrification process happening during his lifetime in most catholic countries. Only Ireland continued to use the imperial measurement system. Thus it might be, he used miles on the areas using miles, and changed to using kilometers as miles as the Nine Companions had traveled far enough from the countries depicting England.
If we use the scale given by Tolkien, but so we make a kilometer-scale to the map, and then change the word ’kilometers’ back to ’miles’, we get the the European map to shrink by c. 38% of the real. Said another way, we should multiply the map of Europe by 0,62. Already, this alters the look of the fit between the two and changes the position of current countries projected to the Middle Earth map, considerably. The following map depicts the size of Europe to Middle Earth calculated this way. As we see, vast areas of the east get covered by the map of Middle Earth way better than before, and we can even see some of the features of the maps conform pretty well to each other. The most notable of these is the form and size of Ered Nimrais, which resembles the Alps pretty well. Much of Eriador seems though to have sunk under water, more of this later on. . [2, Laichalaf]

It is still though evident that Europe does not fit well to Middle Earth, thus we know a Godly intervention has happened. Especially, the formation of Adriatic Sea would need to be explained by direct intervention by Eru.

As said, the differences between the current Europe and the prehistorical Middle Earth, can be explained by the interventions by Valar and Eru. They have though been rather hesitant to use their force and might all through times. Even, to defeat the manifestation of evil in the Third Age, Sauron, they sent in Maiar-spirits, though they likely could have fast, efficiently and easily defeated Sauron themselves. It is possible they did not want to shake the minds of the peoples to become like the peoples adopting the Cargo-cults in the far-east. Why do anything, if a supreme power, be it machines, supreme culture, or Godly one, shows this to be unnecessary, useless or done in vain? The bravest, most active and noblest peoples of Middle Earth might have become similar aboriginals, selling local handwork to passing tourists or gods. I for one wouldn’t want to see the Dwarf smiths living on shacks by the roads selling bad copies of Nauglamir to the passing British soldiers or their fiancées. Nor, see Aragorn to perform a traditional Bulgarian sword folkdance imitating the capture of the bride in the marriage ceremony, and afterwards asking a direct donation, to support local cultures or to get money to feed ‘the modern Eldarion’.

Hrmm-hmm-huum, got a bit carried away there. In the next installment I’ll describe some of the changes that occurred during the 4th Age in the southern parts of the northwestern Middle Earth, and start to provide an explanation of why there are very few historical accounts of these.
Now that we've established the timeline for the Fifth Age, we may begin to examine one of the more mysterious items found among Tolkien's belongings. The following speaker is of the 'Hobbits are the Best'-sect, so he may have some astonishing stories for us.

Hrmm... thank you for your rather biased introduction. As you, and most of you here present, know, we do not call ourselves by that name. Most of you have been brought up in an environment where it's virtually impossible to not know our views on recent history, which are almost the same as you have. In fact, we differ mainly on the interpretation of the 'Book of Westmarch' which you consider to be an authentic account of things long gone. I'll admit it's a real thing, and very old, but to believe it's been unchanging for over 5000 years? Well, there aren't too many miracles or works of Eru, Valar or Maiar recently, as you call them, so we might as well assume so. This is a scientific presentation so let's leave the strict adherence to various scripts of Old and look only at the evidence of the modern times.

First, I'll need to thank the people at the Tolkien Society of Drann, preserving the inheritance of the translator, of the opportunity, to look and study some of the less holy objects he left us. This presentation would not have been possible without their assistance.

As you know, JRR Tolkien, whom you call the Redeemer of Faith, left a huge repository of writings, drawings, maps, linguistic studies of the languages long gone and explanations of the true and proper religious practices here on Middle Earth for us to wonder and examine. Less certain is the knowledge about the figurines, miniature sceneries and buildings, records of entish speech, and even a couple of re-enactments of the mighty battle scenes of Third Age filmed on black and white 8 mm and replicas of Anduril and Glamdring he made during his time in New Zealand. We are told the replicas of these are faithful reproductions of the originals. I'm not here to question these, but rather trying to explain why a certain item of his might be more important than we have assumed.

This presentation assumes the view of, what the the introducer ironically called the 'Hobbits are the Best'-church about Tolkien being a spirited writer and a scholar speaking of Eru through his writings. The themes presented in his legacy are much the same we consider to be relevant to the communion of faiths. The sheer amount of work he did to promote the knowledge of Eru in this world of heathenism could be considered a miracle in itself. There are, however, items that seemingly do not connect to the Great Story of the Middle Earth. I was presented to these, and allowed to further examine some of these, and among these there was a city map made in modern style, with no info of where it was from. It though had some inscriptions in a curious style of Quenya, it looked like.

Me, somewhat versed in Old English, Norse, and Gothic pretty soon noticed these tongues Tolkien normally used in his more esoteric notes regarding the Ages of the Trees couldn't be applied here. Parts of the markings on the map were written in almost unintelligible Sarati. This was though an indication that the map was from the period when Tolkien started working on elven languages, gnomish, sindarin and quenya, that is 1926-1928.

The fact that the map was not in Adunaic, as the highly respected scholar Ar-Thurdenthil (pseudonym meaning the 22 halo of the moon) told me, directed my attention to Uralic languages, the largest of which are Hungarian and Finnish. An often repeated claim is, Tolkien based elven tongues on these agglutinating languages, but in reality many features of the elvish languages are similar to continental Celtic languages of Roman times, possibly the best comparisons to date are to Lepontic and Rhaetian languages. This would be a natural progression from the speeches used during Aragorns' time. And this fits neatly to the translation style of Tolkien using ever older languages to ever older cultures in the book. Additionally, Tolkien never visited these countries, so why would there be a map of a Finnish or Hungarian city in the middle earth corpus?

But the languages presented in the map, turned out to be de-vowelized Finnish or some of the early forms of sindarin. At the time of the making the map, this must have been 1927 or 1928, Tolkien almost never used tehtas and was frequently experimenting with various ways of interpreting the Book of Westmarch, along with the writing system and constructing maps according to the badly damaged original and the text. It's remarkable how the names on the map are already at this time almost in the correct positions. He must have used a system of rectangular coordinates present in some early copies of the Book. The only difference here is that the coordinate system is mirrored!

The remarkable fearture of mirroring the directions may have the explanation that long stretches of the book happen during the nights. Let me explain. According to my theory, Tolkien, in his early days, was not sure of the historicity of the Book! ... ... Please calm down ... ... ... My theory states that in the 1920s and early 30s Tolkien had only photocopies of the book at his disposal, and we all know how bad these can be. If he had the original, it's not likely he would have made the mistake of confusing the Westron 'west' and 'east' and 'day' and 'night'. This would have turned the orientation of the map like it was.

After he got the Original Book in his possession right before WWII, he of course noticed his error and noticed how it clearly depicts European coastlines before the intervention of Eru. No Wegener needed! So my theory claims that in his early days, JRR was not infallible, and attempted to explain the book as a medieval fiction from the city of Turku, southwest Finland, all with elves, dwarfs, pixies as hobbits and Gandalf as Santa Claus. The Middle-Earth humans would be Finns and the Numenoreans Swedes, who had just come to the shores of Finland in 1400s. This part of the theory needs further study, though. I'm hoping I'll get to study the appendixes of the original or at least a good copy later on.

During the process of deciphering this early depiction of the western parts of Middle-Earth I had to learn 3 new languages and travel widely in the former Lamedon territory in northen Italy. The original did not have the markings of the forests, mountains, and most of the rivers, but only the names of the places. I'm here to present the final version of the map in my dissertation to the audience for the first time, this has been approved as 'somewhat speculative' by the White Council of Shirewood. I've added the mountain chains, most of the rivers, and the coastline. Several locations had to be moved from the more accurate locations in the modern maps, notably Erebor is about 50 km east of the true one. Other changes are present also. Copies of this map are available at request in the given url, so students and researchers may observe the remarkable coincidences with Turku and Middle-Earth topography and locations. Finally, I hope the map will be of assistance in deciphering the other early writings of the Redeemer. Thank You.

Glad to see you gathered here in so large numbers, in this lecture, I'll attempt to convince some of those who are still in some doubt of the work of J.R.R.Tolkien as the unifying element of our common knowledge of the historic events. Some of the information presented may be somewhat aggravating to some of the listeners, but to you I'll remind you this is just a version of the Grand Story of Middle Earth and Eä, not claiming to be the truth let alone the full truth of the history and our predicament. What we believe is our own belief and this would be one belief among several. Thank you.

As we well know, from the surviving annals of Gondor, the 3rd age ended about 5100 years ago (or, as it is in the current reckoning, 3102 BC) Soon afterwards, the extent of human achievements in the southeastern and far eastern countries became evident in the explorations sent by king Elessar to these far out lands. These are undoubtly one manifestation of the influence of the so called black Numenoreans and also likely the effect the two blue wizards Pallando and Alatar had on these peoples. The dominating theory currently is, that Manwe and other valar observed how the Faithful wanted to live by themselves in Numenor, and attempted to nudge the wild races towards the proper manners by sending two teachers in the far out lands. There is little doubt the Two were responsible for some internal disturbances and insurgencies in the dominion of the Enemy Sauron. Notably, Peoples of Khand (f.e. in the city of Harappa) and eastern Near-Harad started what later is known as irrigation and they also started using symbols to convey message. Sauron merely tolerated this for their supporting role in supplying the black armies by food. It is not known when the Two left Ennor, but the rise of the agricultural neolithic cultures near the eastern end of the Ennor has been attributed to the influence by the two Blue wizards. This would mean they left Ennor, if they survived Sauron's Purges, about the same time the Queen Mother Arwen II died. They would have sailed to the burnt lands of Americas showing to some local cultures ways to build buildings and exited Arda to Valinor soon after this.

For awhile there was peace and happiness all over Arda. But Eru decided once again, for reasons unknown, to shape the earth. It's possible It wanted to erase the central plains of Mordor for ever, in order to keep the Evil from taking a hold of this area pretty central to human cultures of this time. This caused widespread upheaval everywhere in Arda and led to the formation of the Black Sea, the name of which in the elven tongue is Morgaer. It is also said by some, It wanted to change the humans back to their natural state of innocence. By separating the areas ruled by Gondor from these infant cultures in Khand and Near-Harad, some say, the plan of Iluvatar is more clear to Valar. Thus the Mediterranean Sea was formed by changing the location and extent of areas of Harad. This happened, as far as we know it, c.2150 BC, destroying many old cultures, for example the first near-Harad culture in Egypt entered the First Intermediate Period. Gilgamesh Epic was written describing widespread flooding and upheaval.

The other changes made by Valar at this time was the removal of mithril and smithed iron, and for horror to some, removal of pipeweed from the middle earth. They were no doubt scared of the feuds between the less civilized peoples and thought Unified Kingdom should not have means to overpower these. The way the knowledge of iron smithing was also removed, speaks to us of the power of Eru. Only few pieces of these remained on earth to be marveled by the dwarves of the skills of Aule.

The sad, some say disasterous, effect of this interference by the Valar on the human cultures was the relocation of the capital of the Unified Kingdom to South of Mediterranean by the king Intef, this can be inferred from the simultaneous downfall in the areas of former Gondor and the rise of the Middle Kingdom in Egypt. After him, the king Mentuhotep ruled over the vast areas of Eastern Harad vassalling also the states further east. Soon after, the kings started to build a high tower over in Khand to show their might. The confusion was large these days. The peoples living this time even relocated the library of Minas Anor, as the removal of iron from the construction materials left the large buildings of old into an unrepearable state. As we know of the Tolkien documents, most of the early history of the world was lost from human knowledge in the burning of the library of Alexandria. This led to an extensive rewriting of history during the Dark Ages.

The defining character of the Fourth Age was the rise of Men, and the disappearance of the other races. Whilst Tolkien claimed to have talked to some hobbits, dwarfs and even elves, no independent records of these meetings are existent. Nevertheless, the Red Book of Westmarch exists, though the fragility of it prevents public presentations. It was given to Mr. Tolkien to study during his trip to southern Germany in the 1930s, as he was an expert on old tongues of Europe and it was in peril to be lost to Nazi ideology of burning books and inventing a glorious history. It appears The Book was kept in secret in a monastery somewhere near Basel, that was still adhered to the worship of the Eru, a rarity in these times of several sects.

These sects are a product of the interference of several Maia entities over the human cultures during the fourth and the beginning of the fifth ages. All of these were claiming to be 'Servants of Eru', and maybe they were. Nevertheless, the inability of the humans to understand the Plan of Eru led to the development of several sects, such as the followers of Zoroaster, 'the lord of the dwarfs'. The feuds between these sects have even led to the well known disagreement over the start year of the fifth age. As this lecture is kept near the lands the hobbits originated, I'll use the reckoning that begins with the last confirmed meeting of hobbits and men, this happened about the same time one of the Maias mentioned, disappeared from the grave. This year is thus year 1988 of the Fifth Age. The Maia in question revered children saying things like 'you should bé like children' and 'let the children come to me', and as hobbits are like 'only children to your eyes', it is speculated he was sent by Eru Iluvatar to gather hobbits to their version of Aman. It could of course be they still live here somewhere, among our children. But at least the recent searches in Indonesia have not revealed any hobbit holes that would have been recently used. The name one current sect uses of hobbits is of course Homo floresiensis. We should not do this but use the proper name.

This is our current understanding of our predicament, though there are many other explanations as you well know. Some of the sects have in fact been pretty useful as far as the human happiness goes, but we should not forget Saruman's work in combining the human and the orc race. The descendants of these may still be living out there, the orc-like humans Tolkien warns us about. Praise Manwë and Yavanna, but above all is Eru Iluvatar, go in peace.

Thank you for listening, I'll take questions in the comments section afterwards.

" Hey Treebeard, do you know about the grey-robed guy wandering hereabouts, who keeps posting these notes with writing on them? There's plenty more of these on trees on the north side. He even STAPLED one on me! Is this something we should care about?"
"Ah, Blandelm, looking excellent!.It's been a while since I noticed you! Are you still going on with this fancy of the most tree look-alike competition? The competition final was like...humm...50 years ago and everyone wondered where you were!"
"Oh, good to know, anyway, do you know of this guy? I thought this poster was an excellent final decoration, but after a while, I thought maybe this is a matter that should be told to others too. We can't have people running around with staplers here, now do we?"
"Well...humm...yes... The guy is from the West. He's got my permission for that. This is some ultra-important job the Big Man Himself has given him. He had the credentials and all. He told me there are four more of his kind roaming around the place, I've met one other, this olive-brown dressing guy is pretty ok, he even asked about the girls.
"Ah, I guess that's all well then. At least this one is not using NAILS, brárumm. Anyway, what does it read in there?
"Umm...hmmm... He's seeking Hobbits. I guess that is some modern word of the West, I don't know what it means. Then he lists a whole bunch of qualities for these 'Hobbits' he's seeking. Doesn't look too good for him, though he said to me this wasn't his top priority right now. Hmm..umm..., "Able to sail a rapid", "Not frightened of horses, wolves", "Two Million steps in 10 months" ...well that's a lot. This sounds like these Hobbits, what ever they are, are pretty small. I'd say we have got nothing to worry about them.
"I knew there was something you didn't know! So, should we keep an eye out for these creatures? They sound a bit like noegyth nibin, but I never saw one sail or row a river back in Beleriand. They used rafts or travelled with others, if forced to cross a river, I think.
"Umm... I think not, this is Big Man stuff and I guess we shouldn't interfere with that.... ummm yes, I think I'm going to forget about this... there's plenty of matters of the forest to take care of... hummm... Have you, for example, considered making a complaint about the decision over the look-alike competition? I'd say you have a chance of getting an appeal through since you clearly stated your intention to take part on it! How about that? Let's get to Hazellock's place, yes?Oalehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14032383453035968859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4637274346873044737.post-80627017429211530952015-09-27T07:54:00.003+03:002015-09-27T07:54:59.286+03:00Aries and Pisces (photo)

Well, almost all of them. The blog's been pretty dead lately, I've had another interests than writing recently. Maybe when and if the winter comes I'll start to use this place for publishing something again. Also could be I'll start a new blog for some of the stories here.Oalehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14032383453035968859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4637274346873044737.post-72219152991036489032014-10-29T10:20:00.004+02:002014-11-01T07:33:12.118+02:00local politics The economical-political complex (1) in my hometown is somewhat hellbent (for about 25 years now (2)) to get themselves a parking spot near the 3rd classiest night club (3) in the city. Well, actually they want the parking spot near the bar (4) of the night club. They intend to do this by digging up the clay under the farmers' market square (5). To be sure they get a parking spot from this location, they intend to dig it under the mean sea level, I guess they aim to flood the lower level so they can start the pumps needed to keep the place dry only when there is a meeting of politicians and economic elites going on in the said bar (happens every now and then, I've been told).

Regular readers are likely aware of my views on climate change (6), so I'm kind of against the waste of money in this matter. The problem here is that the supporters of the said (in 50 years) submerging parking facility, got their plan approved just before the elections by one vote, with several representatives missing the meeting. They say changing the approved plan for the facility would take years. With this in mind I drew in about 30 minutes an alternate cross-section of the plan for a parking facility on the same location (7). This has of course the trouble that the bar in question would lose the sunlight and the open summer terrace it currently has so it's not likely to be noted anywhere. Further some buildings around the square would look a bit funny afterwards (the hotel that has the bar in question and the Swedish Theatre of Turku) and some others likely would have to make alternate entrances two stories up. As a joke this plan has the drive-in from another parking facility (there is another option also). Enough of local politics. I don't know why I wrote this in english. It doesn't make sense to tease the sensible audience I may have with this sort of crap. Maybe I should try politics but I think I'm not thick-skinned enough.

As a consequence, this is mainly for finnish readers contemplating how on earth they could give up their internal combustion engine powered personal transportation vehicles aka. petrol-derived fuel using cars and bicycles aka. modeps and motorcycles, thus the rest of the text is in finnish.

Öljyn ja maakaasun kallistuessa on niiden käyttöä syytä vähentää. Kivihiilen polton haitat ovat pitemmällä tähtäimellä erittäin huomattavat, polttotekniikasta riippumatta. Parhaimmat arviot yhteydestä ilmakehän koostumuksen ja merenpinnan tason viittaavat vähintään 9 metrin merenpinnan tason nousuun jo nykyisellä ilmakehän koostumuksella, jossa on n.402 miljoonasosaa kasvihuonekaasuiksi kutsuttuja kaasumaisia eristeitä. Nämä kaasut toimivat eristeinä infrapunan eli lämpösäteilyn aallonpituuksilla, tällöin niiden lisääntyminen ilmakehässä nostaa maapallon pinnalla olevan infrapunasäteilyn määrää eli pintalämpötilat kohoavat. Yksi tärkeimmistä löpön (slangia, tarkoittaa fossiilista polttonestettä) käyttökohteista on liikenteessä, tavaroiden ja ihmisten liikkumiseen kuluu vuodessa runsaasti tätä Jumalan yli 60 miljoonaa vuotta sitten maahan hautaamaa ainesta. Joitakin nuorempia öljyesiintymiä toki myös löytyy, näiden sijainti on kuitenkin varsin hankala porausta ajatellen (vrt. Deepwater Horizon).

Asiaan.

Miten voisi yhdessä päivässä päästä paikasta A paikkaan B koko Etelä- ja Keski-Suomessa, käyttämättä fossiilisia polttoaineita?

There was a shooting in a military installation on 02.04.2014, which is not surprising, as military handles guns regularly. Also there's been some talk recently of domestic use of guns so I was a bit surprised that wikipedia didn't have any images on gun related deaths. Getting the sources correct is of course difficult and I didn't try to improve nor expand on wikipedia sources. The first image is a bit misleading since I left all of Asia, Africa, Central and South America out. Also there weren't any statistics on many many countries so if your country isn't listed wikipedia is to blame. Oh, also, the scales are just what was the quickest way of checking relative positions between countries they may not represent what they say, so the recommended procedure for spreading these is to make one self.

It looks like visits from USA have increased somewhat after this went live so the short take away wrt this country are as follows:

1. for a western (and some of the former eastern block) country, USA has a quarter to a third (c.30%) more gun-related deaths than it should have considering the amount of gun-ownership.

2. it looks like USA citizens are near the average in solving their problems by shooting if we look at the whole world, looking at western world only, USA is in the highest third in their trigger happiness (if you think death by gun causes this too).

3. made also an image (unpublished) of how many of the guns in a country are used in a gun-related death. However, this should be multiplied by the number of people in these countries to get more solid statistics so leaving this out. For USA the number is 1 in 8641 (so be careful when buying the 8641th gun, it might kill you)

General observations:

1. deriving from the 2nd image, it's obvious that the world hasn't yet reached a normal distribution regarding gun-related deaths. What to think of this, is harder to put to words than I want to have publicly published.

'Kids, would I get some attention? ... ... Thanks. What I have here to show you is an image of the subject of the couple of stories you're next about to hear. This image has been passed to me by the elders and I think it's been originally done two ages ago, maybe three. I'm sorry, it has been scribbled over by some jokesters, so it's not something you need to copy and remember as such. There are more pure and more complex versions of this image available in the public library, though you cannot loan them they're there for you to see, if you want. Just remember that they are not all the same. Even nowadays some smart people over in the larger schools for young adults during their wanderyars argue which are the best versions so don't bother to argue between yerselves over this. You remember last time we talked of long-gone monsters. Now it's time to hear how monsters vanished and how animals appeared.'

'Hello kids, you've now a little bit older than last year, and with all your good questions the teachers have decided you're so smart now that you need a few more teachers. You may remember Dork the Storyteller from last year, and he started telling you about how everything came to be. He is a well-spoken sage, and I'm not trying to tell you much differently about origins of everything, heavenly things and earth, but use my own words to describe his story. You also possibly remember something about Erila's stories
, and I'll try also to tell something about her stories as well. So, you may think my classes as history and herstory, since I hear some of you have been inventing new words about things you do not know the proper name yet. During this year of your studies, the other teachers will also start to reiterate - tell again - the stories of old and some of the new too, but you already see how things are and how they're done - nowadays - with your parents, family and village, so we're here just keeping you company and answering some questions of youse, while the heavy work you can't yet do is being done.
As you see, I'm old and a bit crippled, this is partly because of the heavy labor, but I've got a good memory, so I can be here with you to tell stories about labours of old. So, let's use these 4 hours of storytelling each day to our benefit, you'll get to do stuff later on the day in the practical school.'

'So, are everyone comfortable? Please do not make much noise so those two guys behind leaning to the ice age boulder can also hear, in fact you two could come a bit closer. It's a nice day so we can be outside, but outside is so large you may get lost if you do not know enough about it.

In the blog Science of Doom there's been a lot of deliberation about the ends and the beginnings of the ice ages, or glacials as they're known in the geology department, recently. The blog host has kindly provided readers a lot of data and mathematics involved in meteorology and climatology. In part nine of the series on paleoclimates he gave a link to the NGRIP data set. And on later chapters also plots of insolation on various latitudes during the last glacial and interglacial. Previously I had found the EPICA core record.

The image is a bad example of wiggle matching combining the info mentioned. Now, I'm not claiming Toba eruption messed up the southern hemisphere circulation so the antarctica didn't get snow for 6000 years or that the Holocene climate maximum melted some 400 years of NGRIP data nor that EPICA borers dropped and shattered a five hundred year segment of the core or some other mishaps to have happened. I'm merely stating that inserting ~7000 years in this 123000 year section of paleoclimate data seems to get the records from different hemispheres to match more closely to each other. That's 5,7% of the whole set. That's still way better accuracy than many economists get.

If this was all the complications presented by the honorable host of Science of Doom in matching the ice core records to orbital theory of glacial inception (so called Milankovitch cycle theory) it would still be a hard run for anyone. But no, the orbital wiggles producing variations in the amount of insolation on different areas of the world during the ice age cycles do not seem to match well on the last glacial. I used the image for 40-50S insolation as the base for the image manipulation (no maths or curious theories here at all, at least yet) since I think the starts of the interglacials should have more to do with insolation over the oceans than over the continents. I've though organized the NGRIP and EPICA data to a same spreadsheet so I may start to manipulate those (in order to find out where the missing 6-7000 years might be). Anyway, as can be seen on the image, succeeding in this mathematical task with pretty wild theoretical assumptions would still leave matters unclear considering glacial and interglacial inception via orbital theory.

So the image is the initial artistic interpretation done before forming any hypothesis or doing any maths on a scientific problem of the exact effects of orbital variation on earth.

FTR (for the record): NGRIP was mutilated in 2 places and EPICA 8 times, in one case both had to be adjusted, because this is not science.Oalehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14032383453035968859noreply@blogger.com5
